Challenge: Deliberate false translation of the Quranic verses and words by rashad khalifa

This article is to expose the deliberate wrong translation by rk of the holy Quran. In this article I will look into only 3 words and will look at more words later. However even this article is enough to expose rk's intentions.

PART ONE

1)"YAMEEN" in different forms such as "AIYMAANUKUM" which means "right hand"

A note to the reader: As you go through this discussion, please ask yourself these questions:

  • How well is the essence of the meaning in the verse conveyed? 

  • How would you practice your religion differently adhering to either suggestion on how the verse should be translated? 

  • Which translation is in accordance with the entire message in the Quran, considering all verses?

  • Could it be that the objection is misplaced due to not understanding the broad amount of synonyms that could be applied to most words in the extremely rich Arabic language?

  • Which choice of word best represents the depth and width of the Quranic message in each verse? 

 

To understand the importance of translating a verse to convey the intended meaning, the essence, just compare how different translators have presented verse 22:15. This is a proof of the confusion that arises when the translator is unable to translate expressions in one language to convey the actual meaning to another.  

The expression "Ma Malakat Aymanukum" in the Quran. 

This is one of the most abused expressions in the entire Quran (MMA) which translates word for word as "What your right hand possess". Many traditional Muslims have followed corrupted scholars who innovated and fabricated laws that have no basis in the true Islam (Submission) and contradict the laws of God in the Quran.

Frequently, people wonder about this statement in the Quran and whether or not it indicates that it is allowed to have sexual relationship with people described as "what your right hand possesses" or not, since many traditional Muslims abuse this statement to allow themselves sexual relations without responsibility. 

When studying the Quran carefully we discover that the expression (MMA) covers five categories of people that could be men, women, boys or girls. Although different meanings in different verses, all fall under the same classification - a group of people who depend on you for their living requirements, security and well being. 

Only in two categories out of the five MMA, is sexual relationship allowed and only after these MMA are part of a marriage (as a spouse). Even in case of war, all the captured women (and men), fall under the protected MMA and cannot be considered sex objects.

To clarify your objections to the reader, let us start by saying that you've cited 6 different words related to the expression "What your right hand possess" occurring in a total of 60 times in the whole Quran. You've listed 12 complaints about the translation of 5 of these words. To further help the reader we've illustrated which of the occurences of the 5 words you are complaining about in each example given. 

The verses about which you have presented your complaints are marked in Bold.

Complaints about Word 4:

[4:3] If you deem it best for the orphans, you may marry their mothers - you may marry two, three, or four. If you fear lest you become unfair, then you shall be content with only one, or with what you already have. Additionally, you are thus more likely to avoid financial hardship.

The meaning of the word is not mentioned in rk's translation of 4:3

The intended meaning, i.e. essence of God's message in this verse, is perfectly conveyed by God's grace. The obvious confusion that arises when one does not have the skills to convey the intended meaning of a verse in the appropriate wordings for the language used, but try a word for word translation, is evident below.

And if ye fear that ye will not deal fairly by the orphans, marry of the women, who seem good to you, two or three or four; and if ye fear that ye cannot do justice (to so many) then one (only) or (the captives) that your right hands possess. Thus it is more likely that ye will not do injustice.

And if you fear that you cannot act equitably towards orphans, then marry such women as seem good to you, two and three and four; but if you fear that you will not do justice (between them), then (marry) only one or what your right hands possess; this is more proper, that you may not deviate from the right course.

And if you fear that you will not be just in dealing with the orphans, then marry of other women as may be agreeable to you, two, or three, or four; and if you fear you will not be able to do justice, then marry only one or marry what your right hand possess. Thus it is more likely that you will not do injustice.

If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice.

So interpreting only the translations of the four translators above, what does this mean exactly? Isn't this suggesting that God means to say (in principle), 'if you cannot be fair, then marry only one, but you can also marry your captives or what you right hand possess, even if you fear that you cannot be fair...'!!? Does this make any sense?! And what does "what your right hand possesses mean?" Does the last part of the verse have the word "captives" or "marry" in it?! No. 

If you say cite any of the above translations to any English speaking person in the world, not aquainted with the meaning of Arabic expressions, what are they to make of that? How are they to understand the intended message of this verse?

Now, for those who have doubts about the intended meaning of the verse above, please read the following verse as well, in which God assures any man who may entertain the idea of marrying more than one woman, thinking he can be just to several....

[4:129] You can never be equitable in dealing with more than one wife, no matter how hard you try.Therefore, do not be so biased as to leave one of them hanging (neither enjoying marriage, nor left to marry someone else). If you correct this situation and maintain righteousness, GOD is Forgiver, Most Merciful.

This proves that the intended meaning of verse 4:3 is strictly to encourage men to abstain from marrying more than one if they fear being unjust. According to the translators above, it is suggested that God says 'but you can still marry more as long as they are your captives or as long as it is what your right hand possesses.'!!

Complaints about word 4:

[4:24] Also prohibited are the women who are already married, unless they flee their disbelieving husbands who are at war with you. These are GOD's commandments to you. All other categories are permitted for you in marriage, so long as you pay them their due dowries. You shall maintain your morality, by not committing adultery. Thus, whoever you like among them, you shall pay them the dowry decreed for them. You commit no error by mutually agreeing to any adjustments to the dowry. GOD is Omniscient, Most Wise.

The meaning of the word is not mentioned in rk's translation of 4:24

Again, what a good demonstration of the confusion that arises when people translate the scripture without guidance from God, and without the ability to convey the intended meaning in appropriate words in the other language. 

All these translators have stated here that the verse reads that it is forbidden to marry a woman who is already married, unless your right hand possess her! What is the intended meaning of this statement? Does this sentence make any sense as presented here? Please read all variations of this confusion below, then read Rashad Khalifa's excellent and clear translation above.

And all married women (are forbidden unto you) save those (captives) whom your right hands possess. It is a decree of Allah for you. Lawful unto you are all beyond those mentioned, so that ye seek them with your wealth in honest wedlock, not debauchery. And those of whom ye seek content (by marrying them), give unto them their portions as a duty. And there is no sin for you in what ye do by mutual agreement after the duty (hath been done). Lo! Allah is ever Knower, Wise.

And all married women except those whom your right hands possess (this is) Allah's ordinance to you, and lawful for you are (all women) besides those, provided that you seek (them) with your property, taking (them) in marriage not committing fornication. Then as to those whom you profit by, give them their dowries as appointed; and there is no blame on you about what you mutually agree after what is appointed; surely Allah is Knowing, Wise.

And forbidden to you are married women, except such as your right hands possess. This has ALLAH enjoined on you. And allowed to you are those beyond that, that you may seek them by means of your property, marrying them properly and not committing fornication. And for the benefit you receive from them, give them their dowries, as fixed, and there is no blame on you what you do by mutual agreement after the fixing of the dowry. Surely ALLAH is All-Knowing, Wise.

Also (prohibited are) women already married, except those whom your right hands possess: Thus hath God ordained (Prohibitions) against you: Except for these, all others are lawful, provided ye seek (them in marriage) with gifts from your property,- desiring chastity, not lust, seeing that ye derive benefit from them, give them their dowers (at least) as prescribed; but if, after a dower is prescribed, agree Mutually (to vary it), there is no blame on you, and God is All-knowing, All-wise.

When one reads this verse carefully and in light of the whole Quran, the intended meaning of what "your right hand possesses" becomes evident. 

[60:10] O you who believe, when believing women (abandon the enemy and) ask for asylum with you, you shall test them. GOD is fully aware of their belief. Once you establish that they are believers, you shall not return them to the disbelievers. They are not lawful to remain married
to them
, nor shall the disbelievers be allowed to marry them. Give back the dowries that the disbelievers have paid. You commit no error by marrying them, so long as you pay them their due dowries. Do not keep disbelieving wives (if they wish to join the enemy). You may ask them for the dowry you had paid, and they may ask for what they paid. This is GOD's rule; He rules among you. GOD is Omniscient, Most Wise.

The expression "what your right hand possesses" is an Arabic expression that appropriately translates to something that we "rightfully" (correctly, legally, in principle, duly, justly, technically) have (possess, own, hold, enjoy) As we see here in 60:10, women who flee disbelieving husbands are lawful for the believers to marry as long as they pay back the dowries the disbelievers had paid, and pay their own dowries to the women. 

With the help of the guided and clear translation by Rashad Khalifa's it is easy to see the intended meaning of verse 4:24. Imagine if you only had access to the translations above!! Would you be able to understand the verses as clearly? 

Complaints about word 4:

[4:33] For each of you, we have designated shares from the inheritance left by the parents and the relatives. Also those related to you through marriage, you shall give them their due share. GOD witnesses all things

The meaning of the word is not mentioned in rk's translation of 4:33

Please read the translations below, put your hand on your heart and say honestly if they make sense to you. Then read Rashad Khalifas translation and thank God for His mercy in providing us with it.

And to everyone WE have appointed heirs to what the parents and their relations leave, and also those with whom your oaths have ratified a contract. So give them their portion. Surely, ALLAH watches over all things.

To (benefit) every one, We have appointed shares and heirs to property left by parents and relatives. To those, also, to whom your right hand was pledged, give their due portion. For truly God is witness to all things.

The Arabic term (word for word) "what your right hand possesses" is consistently associated with lawful and rightful connections and unions (when it does not actually physically refer to someones right hand). 

This verse, 4:33 reads "right hands" plural. As no man has several right hands, it is logical that the correct understanding of this verse refers to the extended family through rightful (lawful) connections, i.e. marriage. Remember that the whole verse deals with the distribution of an inheritance. 

All the categories mentioned here, parents, relatives and those related to us through marriage, we are told should be given "their due", or their "due portion". As it turns out, these are the only categories in the Quran in which the size of the share, the due, is determined by God. 

[4:12] You get half of what your wives leave behind, if they had no children. If they had children, you get one-fourth of what they leave. All this, after fulfilling any will they had left, and after paying off all debts. They get one-fourth of what you leave behind, if you had no children. If you had children, they get one-eighth of what you bequeath. All this, after fulfilling any will you had left, and after paying off all debts. If the deceased man or woman was a loner, and leaves two siblings, male or female, each of them gets one-sixth of the inheritance. If there are more siblings, then they equally share one-third of the inheritance. All this, after fulfilling any will, and after paying off all debts, so that no one is hurt. This is a will decreed by GOD. GOD is Omniscient, Clement.

Thus, Rashad Khalifa's translation conveys this meaning perfectly clear and absolutely correctly. 

Complaints about word 4:

[4:36] You shall worship GOD alone - do not associate anything with Him. You shall regard the parents, the relatives, the orphans, the poor, the related neighbor, the unrelated neighbor, the close associate, the traveling alien, and your servants. GOD does not like the arrogant show-offs

The meaning of the word is not mentioned in rk's translation of 4:36

This is not correct. The meaning of the word is translated to "your servants". Compare this with the translations below.

[16:71] GOD has provided for some of you more than others. Those who are given plenty would never give their properties to their subordinates to the extent of making them partners. Would they give up GOD's blessings?

The meaning of the word is not mentioned in rk's translation of 16:71

Again incorrect, the word is translated to "subordinates."

And Allah hath favoured some of you above others in provision. Now those who are more favoured will by no means hand over their provision to those (slaves) whom their right hands possess, so that they may be equal with them in respect thereof. Is it then the grace of Allah that they deny ?

And Allah has made some of you excel others in the means of subsistence, so those who are made to excel do not give away their sustenance to those whom their right hands possess so that they should be equal therein; is it then the favor of Allah which they deny?

And ALLAH has favoured some of you above others in worldly gifts. But those more favoured will not restore any part of their worldly gifts to those whom their right hands possess, so that they may be equal shares in them. Knowing this, will they still deny the favour of ALLAH ?

God has bestowed His gifts of sustenance more freely on some of you than on others: those more favoured are not going to throw back their gifts to those whom their right hands possess, so as to be equal in that respect. Will they then deny the favours of God?

Who are those that are rightfully ours, that technically are in our service, that we will not give as much provisions as we ourselves possess, if not our subordinates? 

Just as we human beings will not give up our power and provisions to others to make them equal to us, why do some suggest that God would do that? This is what has in fact happened in all the major religions, where divine powers have been atttributed to prophets and saints, including the power to help, save and forgive, powers and rights belonging to God alone.

[17:71] The day will come when we summon every people, together with their record. As for those who are given a record of righteousness, they will read their record and will not suffer the least injustice

at last the word right has come but the translation is wrong. "BI-YAMEENIHEE" of 17:71 means in his right hand

(Remember) the day when We will call every people with their Imam; then whoever is given his book in his right hand, these shall read their book; and they shall not be dealt with a whit unjustly.

Call to mind the day when WE shall summon every people with their Leader. Then whoso shall be given his Book in his right hand - such will read their book eagerly and they will not be wronged a whit.

One day We shall call together all human beings with their (respective) Imams: those who are given their record in their right hand will read it (with pleasure), and they will not be dealt with unjustly in the least.

Those who are given a record in their right hand means those who are given a record of righteousness. The meaning is the same. Rashad's translation makes it more clear.

[20:17] "What is this in your right hand, Moses?"

This translation is correct. But the other translations above doesn't make any mention of the word "YAMEEN"

[20:69] "Throw what you hold in your right hand, and it will swallow what they fabricated. What they fabricated is no more than the scheming of a magician. The magician's work will not succeed."

again the word "YAMEEN" is translated correctly

Complaints about word 5:

[23:6] Only with their spouses, or those who are rightfully theirs, do they have sexual relations; they are not to be blamed

wrong translation. rk has translated the word from "right hand" to "rightfully".

As you can see, the misguided translations above suggest that believers are allowed to have sexual relations with their slaves or their captives. Is this message in accordance with the rest of the Quran? That is clearly not the case when we study the Quran carefully, as it should be studied. 

[4:82] Why do they not study the Quran carefully? If it were from other than GOD, they would have found in it numerous contradictions.

One crucial little word often ignored when reading and interpreting the meaning of this verse is the word OR. That word makes it very clear that believers are allowed to have sexual relations with their spouses OR what is "legally theirs". To read more about what this means,read this article.

[29:48] You did not read the previous scriptures, nor did you write them with your hand. In that case, the rejecters would have had reason to harbor doubts

The word translation is correct here.

[37:93] He then destroyed them

The word is not even mentioned in rk's translation of 37:93

The meaning of "striking or smiting with the right hand" is to destroy them, as Rashad has correctly translated. 

The same word is translated in verse 69:45, where we again can see the clear meaning of the words intended in the verse immediately following.

The essence of the verse prefectly conveyed by God's grace, without resorting to word for word translation, which often sounds nonsensical and is much harder to understand for people who are not aquainted with Arabic expressions.

[39:67] They can never fathom the greatness of GOD. The whole earth is within His fist on the Day of Resurrection. In fact, the universes are folded within His right hand. Be He glorified; He is much too high above needing any partners.

Complaints about word 1:

[56:27] Those of the right side, will be on the right side.

The word is translated correct but the last half of the verse is 100% wrong."MAA ASHAABUL YAMEEN" means "what of those on the right hand?" NOT "will be on the right side"

So if you were to translate this verse you would write; "Those of the right side, what of those on the right hand." Does this seriously make sense to you. Would you feel that you have made this verse justice and conveyed the essence and intended meaning of the verse by this translation?

The opinions of 4 other translators, still sadly unable to convey a good representation of the verse, some addings words, some putting in a question or exlamation mark - utterly confused.

Thank God for Rashad Khalifa's translation. This verse is part of a set of verses describing the lower heaven, for those who are on the right side.

The word translation is correct.

Complaints about word 1: 

[69:45] We would have punished him.

No mention of the word.

The intended meaning, that something bad would have happened to Muhammad had he uttered any other teachings besides the Quran, is perfectly conveyed here, as you can see below.

Again, Rashad has conveyed the intended meaning of the words, not translated the verse word for word, which does not do the verse justice in English.

Compare the translation of 56:8, in which the words appear as well, and how well the meaning is conveyed in English. First Rashad Khalifa's translation:

[56:9] Those who deserved misery will be in misery.

[56:10] Then there is the elite of the elite.

Isn't the essence of the verse unchanged? Isn't the intended meaning of the verse clearer with Rashad Khalifa's translation. Hand on heart?

Anybody that has been involved in translating work know that translating the original work word for word to a new language rarely produces good results. It is a must to master excellent understanding of both languages and the essence of different expressions used in both, to best be able to transfer the understanding from one to the other. 

Just because the same words are used in different places, does not mean that their intended nuance and meaning is exactly the same each time. It depends on the context in which it is written. Understanding context is key for a succesful translation. 


2)"YUBAYYANA" and its other forms which mean "explain"

[4:26] GOD wills to explain things for you, and to guide you through past precedents, and to redeem you. GOD is Omniscient, Most Wise.

The word translation is correct

[16:39] He will then point out to everyone all the things they had disputed, and will let those who disbelieved know that they were liars.

The word translation is wrong. The translation rk has used is "point out" instead of "explain".

Explain means give details, describe, put in plain words, elucidate, clarify, explicate.  Thus, the choice "point out" is an extremely appropriate and illuminating use of words. 

[16:44] We provided them with the proofs and the scriptures. And we sent down to you this message, to proclaim for the people everything that is sent down to them, perhaps they will reflect

Again his translation of the word is wrong. Now rk writes "proclaim" instead of "explain".

To say "explain what" or "explain that which" or "make clear what has been" or "explain clearly to men what is sent for them" means to let people know what is sent to them. That is the meaning of the word "proclaim." Thus, again an excellent choice of words. Proclaim also means declare, state publicly and make known. That is exactly what this verse explains, that Muhammad was to make known what was sent down to them.

Again it is wrong.rk has written "point out" instead of "explain", the correct meaning.

How does the choice of words "point out" give a different meaning than that of the four translators below. The intended meaning of the verse is to say that the Quran was revealed to clear up things in which there were differences of opinions. Rashad's translation conveys this very clearly and correctly.

[16:92] Do not be like the knitter who unravels her strong knitting into piles of flimsy yarn. This is your example if you abuse the oaths to take advantage of one another. Whether one group is larger than the other, GOD thus puts you to the test. He will surely show you on the Day of Resurrection everything you had disputed.

Again it is wrong. Now rk has translated the word as "show" instead of "explain", the correct meaning. 

The word "show" means  - demonstrate, illustrate, give you an idea about, explain. So what is the problem? 

Show is actually a more appropriate choice of words, as we see in the verses below:  

[55:39] On that day, no human, nor a jinn, will be asked about his sins.

[55:41] (This is because) the guilty will be recognized by their looks; they will be taken by the forelocks and the feet.

[7:46] A barrier separates them, while the Purgatory is occupied by people who recognize each side by their looks. They will call the dwellers of Paradise: "Peace be upon you." They did not enter (Paradise) through wishful thinking.

[7:48] The dwellers of the Purgatory will call on people they recognize by their looks, saying, "Your great numbers did not avail you in any way, nor did your arrogance.

God will not talk to each and every one of us about the details of our lives. He has created a system whereby we are informed immediately just by our size and our appearances. Furthrmore our lives will be played in front of us by our own hearing, eyes and skins, who will speak up. 

[41:20] Once they get there, their own hearing, eyes, and skins will bear witness to everything they had done.

[41:21] They will say to their skins, "Why did you bear witness against us?" They will reply, "GOD made us speak up; He is the One who causes everything to speak. He is the One who created you the first time, and now you have been returned to Him."

And be not like unto her who unravelleth the thread, after she hath made it strong, to thin filaments, making your oaths a deceit between you because of a nation being more numerous than (another) nation. Allah only trieth you thereby, and He verily will explain to you on the Day of Resurrection that wherein ye differed.

And be not like her who unravels her yarn, disintegrating it into pieces after she has spun it strongly. You make your oaths to be means of deceit between you because (one) nation is more numerous than (another) nation. Allah only tries you by this; and He will most certainly make clear to you on the resurrection day that about which you differed.

And be not like unto her who cuts up her yarn into pieces after having spun it strong by making your oaths a means of deceit between you, for fear lest one people become more powerful than another people. Surely, ALLAH tries you therewith, and on the Day of Resurrection HE will make clear to you that wherein you differed.

And be not like a woman who breaks into untwisted strands the yarn which she has spun, after it has become strong. Nor take your oaths to practise deception between yourselves, lest one party should be more numerous than another: for God will test you by this; and on the Day of Judgment He will certainly make clear to you (the truth of) that wherein ye disagree.

[24:46] We have sent down to you clarifying revelations, then GOD guides whoever wills (to be guided) in a straight path.

No mention of the word in the translation of 24:46 by rk.

3)"FASAADH" in it's various forms which means "corruption"

[2:251] They defeated them by GOD's leave, and David killed Goliath. GOD gave him kingship and wisdom, and taught him as He willed. If it were not for GOD's support of some people against others, there would be chaos on earth. But GOD showers His grace upon the people.

rk has used chaos as the word translation in 2:251

There is already corruption on earth. In fact the earth is full of corruption. The proper translation of the intended meaning here is, as translated by Rashad, chaos. 

Chaos = disorder, confusion, anarchy, disarray, turmoil, madness, mess.

So they put them to flight by Allah's permission. And Dawood slew Jalut, and Allah gave him kingdom and wisdom, and taught him of what He pleased. And were it not for Allah's repelling some men with others, the earth would certainly be in a state of disorder; but Allah is Gracious to the creatures.

So they routed them by the command of ALLAH, and David slew Jalut, and ALLAH gave him sovereignty and wisdom and taught him of what HE pleased. And had not ALLAH repelled some men by others, the earth would be full of mischief. But ALLAH is the Lord of grace to all peoples.

By God's will they routed them; and David slew Goliath; and God gave him power and wisdom and taught him whatever (else) He willed. And did not God Check one set of people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief: But God is full of bounty to all the worlds.

[3:63] If they turn away, then GOD is fully aware of the evildoers.

now rk has translated the word into "evildoers"

Excellent move and choice of words. Those who are misbehave, are naughty, bring trouble, corrupt  and rebel (all meanings of doing mischief) are doers of evil. Thus, again, excellent choice of words which gives a much better understanding of the verse.

Our messengers went to them with clear proofs and revelations, but most of them, after all this, are still transgressing.

This time rk has used "horrendous crimes" as the translation

If you read the part that immediately follows the word, "it shall be as if he murdered all the people," you should be able to understand that a just and intended representation of this word in this verse is not 'corruption' or 'spreading mishief or "creating disorder"', but things more serious than that.

Our messengers came unto them of old with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but afterwards lo! many of them became prodigals in the earth.

For this reason did We prescribe to the children of Israel that whoever slays a soul, unless it be for manslaughter or for mischief in the land, it is as though he slew all men; and whoever keeps it alive, it is as though he kept alive all men; and certainly Our apostles came to them with clear arguments, but even after that many of them certainly act extravagantly in the land.

On account of this, WE prescribed for the Children of Israel that whosoever killed a person - unless it be for killing a person or for creating disorder in the land - it shall be as if he killed all mankind; and whoso saved a life, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind. And our Messengers came to them with clear Signs, Yet even after that, many of them commit excesses in the land.

On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if any one slew a person - unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land - it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if any one saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people. Then although there came to them Our apostles with clear signs, yet, even after that, many of them continued to commit excesses in the land.

The verse that immediately follows, which is the verse you've listed below, actually proves it. 

[5:33] The just retribution for those who fight GOD and His messenger, and commit horrendous crimes, is to be killed, or crucified, or to have their hands and feet cut off on alternate sides, or to be banished from the land. This is to humiliate them in this life, then they suffer a far worse retribution in the Hereafter

This time also rk has used "horrendous crimes" as the translation

Again, thank God for Rashad Khalifa's translation. According to the translators below those who strive to corrupt and make mischief and create disorder in the land, should be killed. Who will then decide what is to be considered corruption, creating disorder and making mischief?! This explains the tremendously miserable state in which God's law is applied in many traditional Muslims countries, in which the death penalty is issued left to right. May God protect us.

The only reward of those who make war upon Allah and His messenger and strive after corruption in the land will be that they will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off, or will be expelled out of the land. Such will be their degradation in the world, and in the Hereafter theirs will be an awful doom;

The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His apostle and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement,

The only reward of those, who wage war against ALLAH and HIS Messenger and strive to create disorder in the land, is that they be slain or crucified or their hands and feet be cut off on account of their enmity, or they be expelled from the land. That shall be a disgrace for them in this world, and in the Hereafter they shall have a great punishment;

The punishment of those who wage war against God and His Apostle, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter;

Whatever you want to call it, when it comes to breaking God's laws and thus creating trouble for others, God makes a distinction between doing so and destroying lives, and doing so and destroy properties. 

[2:205] As soon as he leaves, he roams the earth corruptingly, destroying properties and lives. GOD does not love corruption.

As for the death penalty, God is very clear, that it can only be applied when someone has deprived another of their life. The perpetrator is known, the victim is known, they are of the same sex and social status for it to even be considered to be applied. AND, a pardon and compensation is actually encouraged instead. 

[2:178] O you who believe, equivalence is the law decreed for you when dealing with murder - the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the female for the female. If one is pardoned by the victim's kin, an appreciative response is in order, and an equitable compensation shall be paid. This is an alleviation from your Lord and mercy. Anyone who transgresses beyond this incurs a painful retribution.

Another verse to support that in applying justice when it comes to crimes against our properties and our lives, equivalence is the main rule that should always be applied. 

[2:179] Equivalence is a life saving law for you, O you who possess intelligence, that you may be righteous.

It is NOT equivalence to kill someone because you lost some property because of them. People who steal for example, should of course not be killed, but somehow publicly marked. To read more, click here

An example of a crime that fall under the category of horrendous is explained in the following verse:

[18:74] So they went. When they met a young boy, he killed him. He said, "Why did you kill such an innocent person, who did not kill another person? You have committed something horrendous."

For certain, your Lord's revelations to you will cause many of them to plunge deeper into transgression and disbelief. Consequently, we have committed them to animosity and hatred among themselves until the Day of Resurrection. Whenever they ignite the flames of war, GOD puts them out. They roam the earth wickedly, and GOD dislikes the evildoers

As often as they light a fire for war, Allah extinguisheth it. Their effort is for corruption in the land, and Allah loveth not corrupters.

And the Jews say: The hand of Allah is tied up! Their hands shall be shackled and they shall be cursed for what they say. Nay, both His hands are spread out, He expends as He pleases; and what has been revealed to you from your Lord will certainly make many of them increase in inordinacy and unbelief; and We have put enmity and hatred among them till the day of resurrection; whenever they kindle a fire for war Allah puts it out, and they strive to make mischief in the land; and Allah does not love the mischief-makers.

And the Jews say, `ALLAH's hand is tied up.' Their own hands shall be tied up and they shall be cursed for what they say. Nay, both HIS hands are wide open. HE spends as HE pleases. And what has been sent down to thee from thy Lord will most surely increase many of them in rebellion and disbelief. And WE have cast among them enmity and hatred till the Day of Resurrection. Whenever they kindle a fire for war, ALLAH extinguishes it. And they strive to create disorder in the earth, and ALLAH love not those who create disorder.

The Jews say: "God's hand is tied up." Be their hands tied up and be they accursed for the (blasphemy) they utter. Nay, both His hands are widely outstretched: He giveth and spendeth (of His bounty) as He pleaseth. But the revelation that cometh to thee from God increaseth in most of them their obstinate rebellion and blasphemy. Amongst them we have placed enmity and hatred till the Day of Judgment. Every time they kindle the fire of war, God doth extinguish it; but they (ever) strive to do mischief on earth. And God loveth not those who do mischief.

Again, all these descriptions are covered by the excellent choice of words - evil-doers. 

[7:86] "Refrain from blocking every path, seeking to repel those who believe from the path of GOD, and do not make it crooked. Remember that you used to be few and He multiplied your number. Recall the consequences for the wicked.

This timed rk has used "wicked" as the word translation.

Very good choice of words, as "wicked" covers all the descriptions below. Wicked = evil, bad wrong, immoral, sinful, immpious, etc.

And remember when you were few and HE multiplied you. And behold, what was the end of those who created disorder ! "And squat not on every road, breathing threats, hindering from the path of God those who believe in Him, and seeking in it something crooked; But remember how ye were little, and He gave you increase. And hold in your mind's eye what was the end of those who did mischief.


[7:103] After (those messengers,) we sent Moses with our signs to Pharaoh and his people, but they transgressed. Note the consequences for the wicked.

This timed also rk has used "wicked" as the word translation.

[8:73] Those who disbelieved are allies of one another. Unless you keep these commandments, there will be chaos on earth, and terrible corruption.

at last the original translation "corruption" has occurred in rk's translation of 8:73

And the meaning, as in all the previous verse, are conveyed in an oustanding manner. Clear, concise and in the most efficient way.  

[10:40] Some of them believe (in this scripture), while others disbelieve in it. Your Lord is fully aware of the evildoers.

This time rk used "evildoers" as the translation

[11:85] "O my people, you shall give full measure and full weight, equitably. Do not cheat the people out of their rights, and do not roam the earth corruptingly.

This time "corruptingly" has occurred.

Cheating people out of their rights, IS behaving corruptingly. Very good translation. 

[11:116] If only some of those among the previous generations possessed enough intelligence to forbid evil! Only a few of them deserved to be saved by us. As for the transgressors, they were preoccupied with their material luxuries; they were guilty.

This time rk used "evil" as the word translation.

Again, fantastic choice of word. Evil covers all the nuances in the words chosen below, and more, which gives a deeper understanding of the verse. Evil = wickedness, sin, vice, immorality, malice, ill will, etc.

If only there had been among the generations before you men possessing a remnant (of good sense) to warn (their people) from corruption in the earth, as did a few of those whom We saved from them! The wrong-doers followed that by which they were made sapless, and were guilty.

But why were there not among the generations before you those possessing understanding, who should have forbidden the making of mischief in the earth, except a few of those whom We delivered from among them? And those who were unjust went after what they are made to enjoy of plenty, and they were guilty.

Why, then, were there not among the generations before you persons possessed of understanding, who would have forbidden corruption in the earth, except a few among them whom WE saved ? But the wrongdoers pursued the enjoyment of the good things which they were given in plenty, and they became guilty.

Why were there not, among the generations before you, persons possessed of balanced good sense, prohibiting (men) from mischief in the earth - except a few among them whom We saved (from harm)? But the wrong-doers pursued the enjoyment of the good things of life which were given them, and persisted in sin.


[16:88] Those who disbelieve and repel from the path of GOD, we augment their retribution by adding more retribution, due to their transgressions

This time rk has used "transgressions" as the word translation.

Again, fantastic choice of words. And as with many Arabic words, they do not only convey one limited nuance or meaning, but a broad and at the same time very specific understanding. Some English words represent that better than others. "Transgression" instead of "mischief" and "corruption" is an example of that. Transgression is a very wide word, yet covers both mischief and corruption. Transgression = wrongdoing, misbehaviour, disobedience, sin, offence, unlawful behaviour, misconduct, etc.

For those who disbelieve and debar (men) from the way of Allah, We add doom to doom because they wrought corruption,

(As for) those who disbelieve and turn away from Allah's way, We will add chastisement to their chastisement because they made mischief.

Those who reject God and hinder (men) from the Path of God - for them will We add Penalty to Penalty; for that they used to spread mischief.


[17:4] We addressed the Children of Israel in the scripture: "You will commit gross evil on earth, twice. You are destined to fall into great heights of arrogance.

This time rk has used "gross sin" as the word translation.

The other translations compared to Rashad's excellent translation speaks for themselves.

[23:71] Indeed, if the truth conformed to their wishes, there would be chaos in the heavens and the earth; everything in them would be corrupted. We have given them their proof, but they are disregarding their proof.

If the Truth had been in accord with their desires, truly the heavens and the earth, and all beings therein would have been in confusion and corruption! Nay, We have sent them their admonition, but they turn away from their admonition.

[26:152] "Who commit evil, not good works."

The verse preceeding 26:152 reads:

[26:151] "Do not obey the transgressors.

Verily, Pharaoh behaved arrogantly in the earth, and divided the people thereof into sections; he sought to weaken one section of them, slaughtering their sons and sparing their women. Certainly, he was one of the mischief-makers.

Truly Pharaoh elated himself in the land and broke up its people into sections, depressing a small group among them: their sons he slew, but he kept alive their females: for he was indeed a maker of mischief.

[28:77] "Use the provisions bestowed upon you by GOD to seek the abode of the Hereafter, without neglecting your share in this world. Be charitable, as GOD has been charitable towards you. Do not keep on corrupting the earth. GOD does not love the corruptors."

This time the word translation is "corruptors" which is correct.

But seek the abode of the Hereafter in that which Allah hath given thee and neglect not thy portion of the world, and be thou kind even as Allah hath been kind to thee, and seek not corruption in the earth; lo! Allah loveth not corrupters,

And seek by means of what Allah has given you the future abode, and do not neglect your portion of this world, and do good (to others) as Allah has done good to you, and do not seek to make mischief in the land, surely Allah does not love the mischief-makers.

`And seek, in that which ALLAH has given thee, the Home of the Hereafter; and neglect not thy lot in this world; and do good to others as ALLAH has done good to thee; And seek not to create mischief in the land. Verily, ALLAH loves not those who create mischief;'

"But seek, with the (wealth) which God has bestowed on thee, the Home of the Hereafter, nor forget thy portion in this world: but do thou good, as God has been good to thee, and seek not (occasions for) mischief in the land: for God loves not those who do mischief."

[28:83] We reserve the abode of the Hereafter for those who do not seek exaltation on earth, nor corruption. The ultimate victory belongs to the righteous.

This time also the word translation "corruption" is correct.

As for that Abode of the Hereafter We assign it unto those who seek not oppression in the earth, nor yet corruption. The sequel is for those who ward off (evil).

(As for) that future abode, We assign it to those who have no desire to exalt themselves in the earth nor to make mischief and the good end is for those who guard (against evil)

This is the home of the Hereafter. WE give it to those who seek not self-exaltation in the earth, nor corruption. And the good end is for the righteous.

That Home of the Hereafter We shall give to those who intend not high- handedness or mischief on earth: and the end is (best) for the righteous

[29:30] He said, "My Lord, grant me victory over these wicked people."

rk has translated the word into "wicked people".

"Folk who work corruption", "mischievous people", "people who do mischief" ARE by defintion "wicked people." Just because a translator has used a better synonym, doesn't make it wrong.

He said: My Lord! Give me victory over folk who work corruption.

He said: My Lord! help me against the mischievous people.

He said, `Help me, my Lord, against the wicked people.'

He said: "O my Lord! help Thou me against people who do mischief!"

[30:41] Disasters have spread throughout the land and sea, because of what the people have committed. He thus lets them taste the consequences of some of their works, that they may return (to the right works).

This time rk used "Disasters" instead of "corruption" the original correct translation.

Corruption appears because of what men have done...? This interpretation doesn't make sense! Corruption IS what men do. Disasters are consequences of the corruption and evil men do. That is what Rashad's translation is the better choice, again.

Corruption doth appear on land and sea because of (the evil) which men's hands have done, that He may make them taste a part of that which they have done, in order that they may return.

Corruption has appeared in the land and the sea on account of what the hands of men have wrought, that He may make them taste a part of that which they have done, so that they may return.

Corruption have spread on land and sea because of what men's hands has wrought, that HE may make them taste the fruit of some of their doings, so that they may turn back from evil.

Mischief has appeared on land and sea because of (the meed) that the hands of men have earned, that (God) may give them a taste of some of their deeds: in order that they may turn back (from Evil).

[38:28] Shall we treat those who believe and lead a righteous life as we treat those who commit evil on earth? Shall we treat the righteous as we treat the wicked?

This time rk has used "evil" as the word translation

The word "evil" covers all the words chosen by the translators below, and offers and better, wider and deeper representation of the intended meaning of the verse. The words "corruption" and "mischief" are limited, while "evil" covers all doings that are the opposite of good, which is what the verse intends to point out, that there is a difference in how people who do evil are treated, compared to people who do good. Clear enough?

Shall We treat those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, the same as those who do mischief on earth? Shall We treat those who guard against evil, the same as those who turn aside from the right?

[47:22] Is it also your intention that as soon as you leave you will commit evil and mistreat your relatives?

rk has again used "evil" as the word translation.

Please see comment for verse above regarding the word "evil", which is a much better and wider and thus more appropriate representation of the intended meaning.

Would ye then, if ye were given the command, work corruption in the land and sever your ties of kinship ?

But if you held command, you were sure to make mischief in the land and cut off the ties of kinship!

Would you not then, if you are placed in authority, create disorder in the land and sever your ties of kinship ?

Then, is it to be expected of you, if ye were put in authority, that ye will do mischief in the land, and break your ties of kith and kin?

Rk uses what ever word he intends to, to make people who do not know arabic believe what he says. No other translation such as the translation by Mohammad Marmaduke Pikthall or Yusuf Ali supports his claims.

As you, the reader can ses here, this is a very general statement by this person presenting these challenges. Enough exampels of both Pikthall's and Ali's translations have been presented to you in this article, all the way through, for you to make that comparison and evaluate that general claim, that "no other tranalsation.... supports his claims". What exactly those "claims" are, and how following Rashad Khalifa's translation would make him practice his religion any differently, is of course left unsaid. He simply does not like the words and synonyms chosen by Rashad.

Only you can judge for yourselves what the integrity and quality of Rashad's work is based on the information at hand. 

He has invented his own wrong translation to fool people into beleiving everything he says.

Again, believe what exactly? What verses is it that Rashad has translated so poorly in your opinion that it changes the whole intended meaning and message of the Quran, to in turn divert people's behavior in the wrong way?

Any sincere reader will realize after witnessing the examples above, that no other translator have been able to convey the essence of God's message in the Quran as clearly and as straightforward as Rashad Khalifa.

When on reads other translations one is left with strange and unclear wordings at best, contradictions and direct misrepresentations of the meaning at worst.

In part two I would look into some very important verses which rk has changed to help support his false claims. My next article will be a whole challenge to all submitters to prove me wrong.This article is enough to realize what a big fraud and lier mr rk PHd truely is.

This article has been very helpful in exposing how flimsy your excuses are for disregarding the Quranic message. Because that is in reality what you are really running away from, not from Rashad Khalifa. Rashad Khalifa was nothing more than a tool God used to expose and proclaim to the world that Islam as the world knows it today has been corrupted beyond recognition.

We invite you to come clean and list exactly what parts of your religious practices and beliefs you believe to be relevant for your salvation, that you think Rashad misrepresented in his preachings and material. Focus on the message for some time, rather than the person.
